the story of me and you – FAQ

COURSE FAQ

Is this course just for mums?

No, but this course is written specifically for those who have been involved in parenting a child. The tasks are focused on the experience of having and raising a baby, so it’s ideal for any parents or carers who would like to document their journey with their child.

I don’t have any writing experience, does that matter?

No! Even if you haven’t written since school, I’ll be able to guide you to create a wonderful collection of writing. I’m an experienced teacher and writing specialist and I’ve put this course together carefully to ensure that it will suit writers of any level. There’s no formal writing teaching in this course and no ‘rules’; it’s all about inspiring you to tell your story- and you’re the expert in that!

I’m an experienced writer, is this course for me?

Absolutely- whether you’re looking for a structure for a collection of writing about motherhood, or you need a spark to get your imagination up and running again, this course is for you. The tasks are all open for you to interpret as you wish and there’s scope for you to run with any ideas the course ignites along the way!

Do you offer subsidised places for this course?

Yes. If you feel that you would benefit from this course but the price is preventing you from signing up, please email Sarah at [email protected] to arrange a subsidised place.

What will I need for this course?

You might want to treat yourself to a nice journal or notebook for your collection (take a look at our beautiful The Story of Me and You notebook and presentation box here), but if you prefer to type your pieces, or scribble them on scraps of paper if/when the baby naps, or tap them into your Notes app during the night feeds, it’s entirely up to you! This writing is for you- for your emotional health, to exercise your creativity and to document your journey. How it looks is entirely up to you.

Is it like being at school?

There’ll be no focus on grammar, spelling or handwriting- simply a chance for you to express your ideas, enjoy being creative and build a collection of writing to document this turbulent, wonderful and emotional time. There are no right or wrong answers and there’s no need to share your writing with anyone if you don’t want to. There are no writing ‘rules’ on this course- each week you’ll receive writing tasks and guidance, but you are free to write however you like.

I have my own ideas for what I’d like to write about, is that ok?

Of course! I’d be thrilled for you to write as much as you like, however you like. You might find that once you get started, a task ignites an idea for something else you’d like to write about, or you might discover a new love for writing poetry, or fiction. If so, please let me know- I’d love to know which direction the course has taken you in!

Can I share my writing?

You do not have to share or hand in your writing, but if you are particularly proud of a piece and would like to submit it to be shared on my website, to be read by our supportive audience, please email it to me. You can choose to share your writing anonymously or with your name.

Will you give me feedback?

There won’t be any feedback given on this course, but if you would like me to look at your writing and give you personalised guidance, editing and ideas, you can sign up for additional week-by-week feedback. The cost for feedback on one week’s writing is £60. I’ll give you notes, ideas and perhaps suggest further reading. For each week of the course there will be only 10 spaces available for personalised feedback. After the course has finished, you can sign up for feedback on any piece of writing you have completed during the course.
